2013 – October Report

HAYLING ISLAND BUSINESSMEN’S CLUB

Report John Cushion

Arrangements for the Pig Race Night to be held at the Community Hall on Saturday 9th November are now well under way. This will be the third year running that the Businessmen’s Club has held the event when more than 150 Islanders enjoy an exciting evening of squeaking pigs outdoing one another to become race champion. It is expected that there will be a huge demand for tickets which are priced at £8 per adult and £5 for children under 12 years of age which includes a race card and fish and chip supper. With capacity at the Community Centre limited to 200, tickets may be in short supply so please buy early. 2013 – September Report

HAYLING ISLAND BUSINESSMEN’S CLUB

Report John Cushion

With the Annual Barbeque over and the Club in recess for August it is time to take stock on the year so far and look forward to future events.

The Wally Egan award was made by Club Vice Chairman Dave Stanway at Hayling College at the end of year assembly on 19th July to Sam Fletcher. This annual monetary award and suitably engraved Rose Bowl is made in memory of Wally who served HIBC both as Chairman and Secretary for many years until his death in 2007. The college selected Sam for the award because of the qualities displayed by her and for being a good team worker. Many congratulations to Sam.

At the same time Club Committee Member Marcus Foot presented the Geoff Foot Sportsperson of the Year award to Jake Todd. This is a new trophy and monetary award in memory of Geoff who was a Club member for many years. The Club is pleased to sponsor this award to help promote sport at the College following on from the country’s successful Olympics. Jake is 15 years old and is currently the 2013 RS Feva National Sailing Champion. Let us hope Jake is a future Olympic champion also.

2013 – July Update

A complete Sell Out!!

Report from Hayling Island Businessmen’s Club – John Cushion

With all tickets sold well in advance of the event the annual HIBC Barbeque was a complete success. The weather was magnificent, the food excellent, the Take all That tribute band outstanding and by the look on the faces of 500 party goers everyone had wonderful evening. Club members, friends and relatives toiled untiringly for most of last week and from very early morning on Saturday to turn Northney Farm into the Island’s top party venue. Work finished just in time for the arrival of the first guests, and soon the beef was being carved, the burgers and sausages sizzling and the beer and wine flowing. The various side stalls were kept busy all evening and dancing to Take all That and DJ Malcolm Drew carried on far into the night. And the reward for all the hard work and support? Proceeds of several thousand pounds towards the running of the HIBC Community Bus and other worthwhile causes on the Island in the coming year. A truly remarkable effort!

Whilst it is not possible to acknowledge everyone individually in this report the Club committee would like to thank everyone for their support, ticket sales, raffle prizes, supply of equipment and an enormous amount of help before and on the night. Special thanks to Stan and Mary Pike and son Tim for use of the barn and farm facilities.

2013 – This year’s BBQ is a sell-out

If you have not already secured your tickets for this years BBQ, then sadly you have missed the boat. All tickets are now sold meaning it will be a busy night, but no doubt a good one too.

The evening is headlined by the Take That tribute band “Take All That”. With the usual great food, games and stalls, the evening is always a successful one, and it looks like the weather will be kind to us this year.

Nearly 200 members, friends and guests enjoyed a tremendous evening of entertainment on Sunday 24th March, dining and dancing at Mill Rythe Holiday Village. The raffle was very well supported and thanks go to the following for their generous support with prizes:

Cleancare Dry Cleaners                           Hugh Hickman

Despite being a little under subscribed this year, the Committee hope that The Wine, Dine and Dance Cabaret Evening will return as being a regular event in the Club’s fund raising calendar. Thanks must go to Club member Andy Lenaghan and the management and staff of Mill Rythe for very well arranged evening.

Earlier in the month, newly elected Club Chairman, Pat Keane welcomed nearly 50 current and former Club members and their wives and partners to the customary Chairman’s Cocktail Party held at the Langstone Hotel. In his welcoming speech, Pat reiterated the need for the Club to continue moving forward despite the current economic difficulties. The cost of running the Community Bus increases almost on a monthly basis and the aim of buying a replacement in the not too distant future makes it essential that fund raising is kept at its highest level. Pat took the opportunity of thanking member’s wives and partners for their continued and much valued support to the Club.

At the luncheon meeting on Thursday 14th March, Club members welcomed the president of Hayling Lions President, Jill Sutherland, whose first task was to take a group photograph. Under the supervision of professional photographer Frank Pearce, Jill quickly rose to the challenge although trying to get 25 men to sit still for more than two minutes was an incredible feat. However the results have yet to be viewed! Following lunch, Jill held a question and answer session during which members were given an overview of the Lion’s current activities on Hayling and their aims and ambitions for the future. On behalf of the Club, Chairman Pat Keane thanked Jill for her attendance and for the continued support of the Community Shop in running the Mini Bus.

Please remember that the Club is supporting this year’s Hayling for St George event to be held on Eastoke Plaza on Sunday 21st April when the newly refurbished and re-liveried Community Bus will be on display with representatives from the Businessmen’s Club on hand to explain the Club’s aims and activities.

The Club’s next important fund raising event is the ever popular Annual Barbeque to be held at Northney Farm on Saturday 13th July 2013. Full details including ticket outlets will be appearing in forthcoming editions of the Islander.
