2014 – June Report

50 Glorious Years

On the 12th April the Hayling Island Businessmen’s Club celebrated their Jubilee with The Worshipful the Mayor of Havant.

Report by David J Pawley – Publicity Officer

Members both past and present and their partners attended a celebratory dinner with the Mayor as the guest of honour. The event was very well attended and it was generally agreed that the club was going from strength to strength in supporting the local community, not only with the Hayling Island Community Bus but also with donations to other local deserving causes, the latest beneficiary of which is the new Girls Brigade organisation being set up at St Andrews Church who received a donation of £200.

A special vote of thanks was also given to the Lions who will be presenting the Club with £3,500 as a contribution to our funds.  Their continued support is greatly appreciated.

Although no one has told the weather, it will soon be Barbeque time again and Club members are busy preparing for the Club’s main fund raising event of the year, the ANNUAL BARBEQUE At Northney Farm, St Peter’s Road, North Hayling on Saturday 12th July 2014. Tickets are already flying out the window for this hugely popular event and record numbers are expected again this year. Club Chairman Dave Stanway and his helpers will again be spending many hours on the day spit roasting a whole side of succulent beef in addition to which there will be the normal barbeque fare as well as vegetarian options. Entertainment will be provided by not one but two UK premier tribute bands, TAKE all THAT and ROBBIE WILLIAMS supported by a lively disco, stalls and games. There will also be beer and soft drinks for sale as well as a wine bar. The price of tickets are £17 which includes as much food as you could possibly eat and represents excellent value for a memorable night out. PROCEEDS FROM THIS EVENT WILL GO TOWARDS THE RUNNING COSTS OF THE HAYLING ISLAND COMMUNITY BUS AND OTHER LOCAL BENEFICIARIES.

HAYLING ISLAND BUSINESSMEN’S CLUB – Report By David J Pawley

The Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary with members and former members attending a jubilee dinner at Langstone Hotel on the 12th April.  The guest of honour was The Worshipful the Mayor of Havant and his Lady; an evening enjoyed by all who attended.

Arrangements for the Annual Barbeque are now well under way and the Club is anticipating a large demand for tickets. The HIBC Barbeque has been a firm favourite on the Island for many years and will once again take place at Northney Farm, courtesy of Stan and Mary Pike and their son Tim, on the 12th July; tickets will shortly be available from Club members, Haydens Garage, The Lions Community Shop and Hayling Community Centre. Other outlets will be advised nearer the time.

Although membership of the Businessmen’s Club is currently at a reasonably high level, new members will always be made welcome. In addition to assisting with numerous fund raising activities to run the Community Bus and help with other worthwhile local causes, members enjoy several social events throughout the year as well as twice monthly luncheon meetings at Seacourt. Anyone considering membership please contact Club Secretary Richard Chapman or visit the Club website www. hibc.org.uk for more details.

Use of the Community Bus continues to be in high demand particularly on week days but there is normally some availability at weekends and local organizations are welcome to contact Trevor Slydell on minibus@hibc.org.uk for more details. Please remember that use of the bus is available free of charge although donations are always appreciated.

2014 – March Report

HAYLING ISLAND BUSINESSMEN’S CLUB Report by David J Pawley

Over 250 club members and guests were joined by several local businesses at the Club’s Christmas “Bash” in December. Some great 60s music provided by Out of the Shadows kept everyone dancing until late into the night and the event raised over £1200 which will be used to help worthwhile causes on the Island in the coming year. We would like to thank everyone who supported the event by selling tickets and donating raffle prizes.

Several Club members assisted with the Lions Christmas float in December which raised £224 for Club funds. In addition the annual street collection in Mengham raised a further £552 despite appalling weather conditions. A donation of £30 has also been received from Yvonne Lenn and friends who had a collection during one of their recent events. The committee and members of the Club would like to sincerely thank all those Islanders that contributed to our fund raising activities.

Mini Bus Chairman, Trevor Slydell reported that the new Community Bus was already very popular. Although daytime use continues to be in high demand, the bus is very often not used during the evening or week end. The Club would therefore be interested to hear from any local charitable organization who would like to make use of this very valuable facility either on a “one off” or regular evening or week end basis. Please contact Trevor at minibus@hibc.org.uk or contact any Club member.

The Club’s thanks go for a donation that has been received from Ian Smith and Caroline MacDowell who raised funds with a collection from Islanders viewing their magnificent light display in South Road over the Christmas period. This is the third year that Ian and Caroline have chosen to donate the money to HIBC in the knowledge that the funds would be used for the benefit of local residents.

Earlier in February, newly elected Club Chairman, Dave Stanway welcomed Club members and their wives and partners to the customary Chairman’s Cocktail Party held at the Langstone Hotel. In his welcoming speech, Dave reiterated the need for the Club to continue moving forward despite the current economic difficulties. The cost of running the Community Bus increases almost on a monthly basis. Dave also took the opportunity of thanking member’s wives and partners for their continued and much valued support to the Club.

Please remember that the Club is supporting this year’s Hayling for St George event to be held on Eastoke Plaza on Sunday 27th April when the new Community Bus will be on display with representatives from the Businessmen’s Club on hand to explain the Club’s aims and activities.

The Club is now looking forward to events for this year and the first of which is a Murder

Mystery evening planned for Wednesday 28th May at the Langstone Hotel.  This will be

followed by the ever popular Annual Barbeque to be held at Northney Farm on

Saturday 12th July 2013. Full details including ticket outlets will be appearing in forthcoming editions of the Islander.

2014 – February Report

A NEW CHAIRMAN for HAYING ISLAND BUSINESSMEN’S CLUB Report by John Cushion

The Annual General Meeting of Hayling Island Businessmen’s Club was held at Seacourt on Tuesday 14th the January attended by 21 members who heard an overview of the year and elected a new Committee and Chairman.

In his review of 12 months in office, outgoing Chairman, Pat Keane reported an extremely successful year for the Club culminating in the recent purchase of the new Community Bus. Fund raising met with some fine efforts including the Annual Barbeque, Pig Race Night and Christmas “Bash”. Although a great deal had been achieved, Pat reminded members that there is still much more to be done and asked everyone  to work hard towards keeping the great Club going and able to support the community with the minibus and donations to worthy applicants. Pat was pleased with the Club’s increased membership over the year and impressed to see the lunches so well attended.  However, pressure must be maintained for new blood to ensure the future of the Club.

During the year the Club was able to continue its excellent  relationship with the Lions Community Shop which provides generous support towards the cost of running the Mini Bus. In return the Club helps in the staffing of the shop for which Pat thanked the member’s wives concerned. Pat also expressed his thanks for the excellent support he had received from the Officers and Members of the Club which had helped to make his second year in office most enjoyable

Although the main aim of the Club is to purchase, maintain and run the Hayling Island Community Bus, many other worthwhile causes were supported during 2013 with a number of monetary awards being made to numerous local organizations.  In addition, the Club made its normal donations to the Hayling Island Dramatic Society and continued to support students at Hayling College with the Wally Egan Award and Geoff Foot Sportsperson of the Year Shield. The Christmas party at Sinah Warren was again a great success and was enjoyed by well over 250 local senior citizens. Club members were in attendance to meet and greet the guests and generally ensure the success of the afternoon. However, many thanks must go to the management, staff and entertainment team at Sinah Warren for their wonderful generosity without which the event would be difficult to stage.

Following the committee reports, the election of officers was held and Dave Stanway was elected as Chairman for the coming year. Born in Stoke-on-Trent in 1962, Dave moved to Hayling Island in 2000 to follow his profession in Information Technology for a company in Havant where he now holds the role of IT Associate Manager. With four sons and a daughter now all grown up, Dave and his wife Diane began fostering in 2003 and currently care for a 9 year old lad. After moving to Hayling, Dave involved himself in several community projects and joined the Businessmens Club in 2008 where he initially took on the role of Fund Raising Officer. Dave was awarded the Club’s Doug Broughton ‘Achiever of the Year’ trophy two years running and last year took the role of Vice-Chairman leading to the Chairman’s position for the coming 12 months. When Dave manages to find any spare time, he enjoys Kayaking and boating in any form, one of the benefits of living on the coast.

Before closing the meeting, members elected Dave Stanway as their Highest Achiever of the Year for 2013 and he was presented with the Doug Broughton Cup for his outstanding services to the Club. The “fun” award of the Wooden Spoon for the Club’s Biggest Stirrer for 2013 was awarded to Dave Turvey for the second year running.

Club members now look forward to the challenges which 2014 will bring. Several fund raising events are already planned including the ever popular Annual Barbeque on 12th July. In addition a Jubilee Party is planned for 12th April to celebrate the Club’s 50th Anniversary. A great deal of hard work is envisaged but with the help and generosity of the Island community and businesses a very successful year is in prospect.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the Club or with an interest in joining is welcome to contact recruitment officer at recruitment@hibc.org.uk.

2014 – January Report

Best wishes for the New Year from HIBC Report by John Cushion

The Club Committee and Members would like to wish all Islanders a very Happy New Year with particular thanks to all who supported the Club during 2013. The continuing difficult times we live in make it harder than ever for people to give up their time and hard earned cash to support us but we are never ceased to be amazed at the willingness of Islanders to help us to help others in less fortunate circumstances.

The new Community Bus has arrived. The Club chairman Pat Keane, escort Justin and driver Kay from Age Concern watch on as Dennis & Enid board the new club bus.

Our fund raising events for the coming year will include the old favourites of the Annual Barbeque in the summer and the Pig Race Night later in the year. We also hope to repeat the Christmas “Bash” depending on the success of this year’s event.

At the meeting on 11th December, thanks were recoded to Club Assistant Secretary John Greenland and his wife Brenda and their helpers on the day for all their hard work in arranging the recent stall at the Community Centre Christmas Bazaar.. A total amount of nearly £200 was raised towards the running of the Community Bus and other worthwhile causes on the Island.

It has been a successful year for recruitment with the Club recently welcoming Richard Chapman,  Brian Smith, Pat Riley and Colin Spicer into the fold. All four took on the task of helping with the annual street collection in Mengham before Christmas which successfully raised several hundred pounds towards Club funds. Many thanks to all those who contributed. Rest assured that every last penny is spent benefiting worthwhile causes on the Island.

At the conclusion of the Club meeting on 27th November, Chairman Pat Keane “awarded” the Alan Rae trophy for “Mug of the Meeting” to publicity officer John Cushion. It is believed that this was to record Pat’s disappointment that despite nearly 12 months as Chairman a well known local newspaper was not even aware that he held this esteemed office. Pat’s disappointment was further exacerbated when a fairly new Club member also expressed surprise at the fact.

The Piggies came back to Hayling on Saturday 9th when close to 150 Islanders and friends enjoyed a night out at the annual HIBC Pig Race Night. Fortunes were won and lost during some exciting and hard fought races followed by a fish and chip supper and raffle supported by several local organisations and traders. Before the final race, the Pigs were auctioned to ensure that at least one lucky person went home with the bacon! Many thanks to Club member Malcolm Newnes and his wife Sue for arranging such a successful night out. Thanks also to everyone who attended the event and the following for their generous support which helped raise nearly £1700 on the night.

Wednesday 20th November saw over 250 “not so old” senior citizens enjoy a wonderful afternoon at the annual HIBC Christmas Party arranged in conjunction with Sinah Warren Leisure Hotel. The Sinah team provided the entertainment with an immaculate performance of the pantomime Dick Whittington amid much rapport from the guests. Following tea and cake, the audience was invited to join in with their own rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas led by energetic members of the pantomime cast. Judging by the smiling faces the afternoon was a great success. Club committee and members would like to sincerely thank the staff and entertainments team at Sinah Warren for their considerable generosity and kindness shown to the Island’s senior citizens and for laying on this annual event.

Look out for Father Christmas and his helpers in the Sandy Point area on Tuesday 10th December when Club members will be joining forces with the local Lions to help pull Santas’s sleigh at the annual street collection and again at Mengham shops on Monday 23rd December when members will be out with their collecting tins come rain, hail or shine. We never cease to be amazed at the generosity of Islanders particularly in these austere times but rest assured that every last penny raised goes to help needy causes on the Island.

Report from Hayling Island Businessmen’s Club – October 1964

At a luncheon meeting in October 1964, Committee members agreed that during the winter months, members should all keep an eye open for exceptional hardship among the elderly and infirm of the Island, with particular reference to the provision of sufficient heating in bad weather. It was arranged that Christmas parcels would be sent to two groups, the over 90s and the Needy. The Committee anticipated spending between £40 and £45 for providing coal and paraffin to these two groups.

On Saturday 28th September, the Club held its annual Ladies Night at Hayling Golf Club. Over 80 members, their ladies and guests enjoyed a wonderful meal and then danced the night away courtesy of DJ Malcolm Drew. Many thanks to Club stalwart John Cottle for arranging a superb event.

Earlier in September, members said a sad farewell to long term member Aksel Arneke who is returning to live in his native Norway. Aksel had lived on Hayling for the last 13 years and was a Club member for eight of those. Our very best wishes go with him and wife Ann. However, news on the membership front remains good with another new recruit, Brian Smith, who joined the Club in October.

The first performance of the Station Theatre’s latest production Nathan the Wise was enjoyed by over 100 senior citizens paid for by the Businessmens Club. Sponsorship of HIADS by the Club is a regular event and numerous productions have been enjoyed by large audiences over many years.

Plans are already being made for next year’s Annual Barbeque with the date set for Saturday July 12th July 2014.

The Wally Egan award was made by Club Vice Chairman Dave Stanway at Hayling College at the end of year assembly on 19th July to Sam Fletcher. This annual monetary award and suitably engraved Rose Bowl is made in memory of Wally who served HIBC both as Chairman and Secretary for many years until his death in 2007. The college selected Sam for the award because of the qualities displayed by her and for being a good team worker. Many congratulations to Sam.

This is a new trophy and monetary award in memory of Geoff who was a Club member for many years.
