As with all Clubs the HIBC club was in lockdown for the biggest part of 2020 & 2021 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, and have only been meeting on Zoom, however we are pleased to say that late in 2021 we have been able to restart our face to face meetings.

Dave Stanway : Club Member From 2008 to Present
Born in Stoke-on-Trent in 1962, Dave comes from a working class background, with both parents working to bring up a family of five children. Despite studying and training in the Electronics industry after finishing school, a lack of opportunities meant he began working life in the food industry where he met Diane, his wife of 20 years at the time of writing in 2013. Redundancy prompted a return to college and university in the field of computing, and establishing his own computer business in 1997 where he built a positive reputation in the IT industry. By the end of 1998 Dave began working for AT&T in Redditch, originally in a contractor role providing IT support services to the company. The opening of a new office in Havant encouraged a move to Hayling Island in 2000 where Dave has since taken on the role of IT Associate Manager for the company. With four sons and a daughter now all grown up, Dave & Diane began fostering in 2003 and currently care for an 8 year old boy with disabilities. Since moving to Hayling Dave has got involved with several community projects including the Station Road BMX Bike Jumps, and Playing On The Plaza among many others.
During 2007 Dave spent 10 days in Peru walking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, whilst raising sponsorship money for the ‘Help The Aged’ charity. Dave joined the Businessmens Club in 2008 and the following year took on the role of Fund Raising Officer for the club which led to Dave being awarded the Doug Broughton ‘Achiever of the Year’ trophy two years running.
During 2013, Dave has taken on the role of Vice-Chairman, meaning he will have the honour of Chairman’s position for 2014, the 50th anniversary of the club. If Dave manages to find any spare time, he enjoys Kayaking and boating in any form, one of the benefits of living on the coast.
John Cottle : Club Member from 1975 to Present
Born in North Hayling in 1937, John has been a Club member since 1975 and continues to be actively involved as Club Services Chairman. He served as Club Chairman in 1979 and 1991 and was honoured in 2009 with a lifetime membership in recognition of his many years service to the Club of which he is very proud. In addition to HIBC, John has been involved in many other organisations on Hayling over the years and feels very fortunate to have lived on the Island and been part of its community.
John’s school days were spent at the old Hayling Council School which at the time was the only “none private” school on the Island. Following a 5 year apprenticeship with a large construction company. John qualified as a plumber and after 2 years National Service started his own plumbing and heating business which he continued until his retirement in 2002. John married Iris in 1959 and has a daughter Sharon and two sons Graham and Stephen, the former having taken over the family business in 2002.
Aksel Arneke : Club Member from 2004 to 2014
Born in Bergen, Norway in 1941. Aksel grew up in a very musical family, his father having studied at the Mendelssohn Conservatory in Leipzig in Germany. After completing his education at the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy. he served in the Norwegian Navy, including 8 years sea duty. During this time Aksel met his wife Ann from East Cosham and their only daughter Anne Camilla was born November 1979. After leaving the navy in 1981 as a Commander Aksel, held several post in the Oil and Gas industry before moving Hayling Island in 2000. From here he ran his own company working as a consultant in the UK, Norway, Africa and the Middle East. He finally retired in 2008. Aksel joined the Businessmen’s Club in 2004 and has held various offices including Fund Raising Chairman, Treasurer, Recruitment Officer, Trustee and Treasurer for the Minibus Trust and as Full Chairman in 2007.
Phil Gooch : Club Member from 1978 to Present
Phil is the longest serving non-life member of the Businessmen’s Club having joined in 1978. Born in Portsmouth, Phil joined a local firm of solicitors after completing his education and moved to Hayling in 1968 to become manager of their local office. In 1975 Phil married the girl who had been his secretary in the Portsmouth office and subsequently brought up two wonderful children. Although he retired in 2004, Phil has continued associations with the majority of his former clients on Hayling. As well as being a very valuable member of the Businessmen’s Club and its Charitable Trust, Phil enjoys an active social life including ten pin bowling, shooting and taking as many holidays as possible.
Andy Lenaghan : Club Member 1989 to Present
Born in Fareham in 1945 and one of nine children Andy moved to Hayling at one year old and has lived on the Island ever since. After attending Hayling and Warblington schools Andy completed his education in 1960 at the age of 15 and had various jobs until eventually settling into an initial career in DIY retailing. It was during this period that Andy met his wife Lyn and admits that this was the only time in their married life that he was her “boss”. Leaving DIY in 1972 Andy pursued a completely new career in insurance and became Hayling’s “Man from the Pru” a position he held for 20 years. Although he retired in 2002 Andy continues to be extremely active within the Island community and is currently local Councillor for Hayling West a position he has held for 10 years. Over this period he managed to fit in no fewer than nine Hayling to Paris bike rides for charity. Since joining the Businessmen’s Club in 1989 Andy has held several committee and council positions including Secretary and officer for Club Services, Recruitment and Fund Raising.
In whatever spare time he has left, Andy enjoys a regular game of golf and spending time with his wife Lyn, daughters Karen and Clare and four granddaughters and one grandson.
Frank Pearce : Club Member 1993 to 2017
Born in Bognor Regis whose father was a shipwright foreman in Portsmouth dockyard, Frank came to live on Hayling Island as a young boy and has been here ever since. One of the best jobs Frank had in his youth was working on the pedalos on Hayling beach, although at most it was only a 16 week season. There were about 15 pedalos and the rescue boat was an 8ft clinker dinghy with a rather worn out seagull outboard engine but a good set of oars! Frank is a well-known photographer on the island and has photographed several famous entertainers and royalty while working for the ‘Princes Trust’. Although Frank has retired from full time employment, he still runs a small business and regularly gives talks on the history ofthe Island. Frank is married to Sheila and have 4 children between them Cindy, Christopher, Joanne and Patrick plus 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren Frank has been a member of the Business Men’s Club since 1993 and he has held many committee positions regarding it a great privilege when he was Chairman in 2004. He is a member of the elite Hampshire Ambassadors, a group of business men who travel around Hampshire encouraging local businesses to the rest of the UK. Frank is also a local county councillor who firmly believes actions speaking louder than words. He is also well known locally for playing Father Christmas at the senior citizen party attended by 200 people hosted by the Businessmen’s Club.
Malcolm Newnes : Club Member 2008 to 2018
Born in Orpington, Kent in 1936, Malcolm’s early years were spent continually on the move following his father’s occupation as a property developer. Moving house, area and school every 6 months became common place until the age of 15 when Malcolm left school to join the family business. This lasted barely a year before a wise uncle saw fit to bundle him off to the navy as boy seaman on HMS Vinvent at Gosport. Malcolm spent the next 44 years in the Royal Navy serving, King, Queen and Country during which time he met his future wife, Sue whilst visiting Hong Kong in 1971. On his return to the UK he made Hayling Island his home base where his two children Vicki and Alex were born but it was not long before his new family were again on the move following Malcolm to wherever he was posted. After retiring from the navy in 1996 Malcolm made his way in civilian life and joined the Businessmen’s Club in 2008 where he has served as Chairman and Secretary. He was honoured at the end of 2012 when his Club colleagues voted him Achiever of the Year. Now fully retired, Malcolm’s hobbies are gardening, following Formula 1 Motor Racing and enjoying the company of his grandchildren.
