2014 – December Report

A busy time for HIBC –  Report by David Pawley

The Piggies came back to Hayling on Saturday 15th November when over 100 Islanders and friends enjoyed a night out at the annual HIBC Pig Race Night. Fortunes were won and lost during some exciting and hard fought races followed by a delicious curry generously supplied by Richard Chapman, the Secretary and his wife, Jilly. Before the final race, the Pigs were auctioned to ensure that at least one lucky person went home with the bacon! Many thanks to Club member Malcolm Newnes and his wife Sue for arranging such a successful night out. Thanks also to everyone who attended the event and their generous support.

Several Club members attended the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Hayling war memorial on Sunday 9th November where Club Chairman Dave Stanway laid a wreath on behalf of the Club.

Club Committee and Members wish to take the opportunity of extending our best wishes to all on Hayling and the surrounding area for Christmas and the New Year and our sincere thanks to everyone who has supported us over the last 12 months. We assure everyone that every last penny that you have helped us raise has been used to either run the Community Bus or assist other local worth causes.

HAYLING ISLAND BUSINESSMEN’S CLUB Report – David Pawley

Arrangements for the Pig Race Night to be held at the Community Hall on Saturday 15th November are now well under way. This will be the fourth year running that the Businessmen’s Club has held the event when more than 150 Islanders enjoy an exciting evening of squeaking pigs outdoing one another to become race champion. It is expected that there will be a huge demand for tickets which are priced at £8 per adult and £5 for children under 12 years of age which includes a race card and supper. With capacity at the Community Centre limited to 200, tickets may be in short supply so please buy early. The Club is still looking for local businesses or individuals to Sponsor a Pig, all proceeds going to local good causes.

With all income from the Barbeque now in and all bills paid, Club Treasurer, Glenroy Van Baskerville reported net proceeds amounting to over £7800 all of which will be used towards the purchase of the new  Community Bus and other local worthy causes. As reported in last month’s edition of the Islander, members devote a great deal of time and energy to the Barbeque which is the Club’s main fund raising event of the year and it is good that these efforts have been justly rewarded.

The senior citizens Christmas Party is due to be held again courtesy of Sinah Warren Hotel on Wednesday 19th November. The Club arranges the party every year in conjunction with Sinah Warren and up to 300 senior citizens attend. Invitations will shortly be distributed to local organisations.

2014 – September Report

HAYLING ISLAND BUSINESSMEN’S CLUB Report – David Pawley

With the Annual Barbeque over and the Club in recess for August it is time to take stock on the year so far.

The Wally Egan award this year was given to James Adams for demonstrating a wide range of Enterprise skills during the year 9 “Design an App” Enterprise Challenge. This annual monetary award and suitably engraved Rose Bowl is made in memory of Wally who served HIBC both as Chairman and Secretary for many years until his death in 2007. The college selected James for the award because of the qualities displayed by him and for the considerable amount of resilience he showed throughout the challenge. Many congratulations to James.

At the same time The Geoff Foot Sportsperson of the Year award was made to Molly Money. This is a new trophy and monetary award in memory of Geoff who was a Club member for many years. The Club is pleased to sponsor this award to help promote sport at the College and was given to Molly for her outstanding contribution to sport.

Did you go to this year’s barbeque?  Did you buy raffle tickets?  Did you check them?  If not then please go to the Club’s website as a number of prizes went unclaimed including the first prize.  It could be you.  Plans for next year’s Barbeque are already underway and the first meeting of the Barbeque Committee is due to take place in September. Arranging the event involves a great deal of hard work and anyone interested in lending a hand next year or indeed in joining the Club should contact our secretary at secretary@hibc.org.uk .

2014 – August Report

Oh! Oh! What a Barbeque! Report from Hayling Island Businessmen’s Club – David Pawley

With all tickets sold well in advance of the event the annual HIBC Barbeque on the 12th July was a complete success. The weather was magnificent, the food excellent, the Take all That and Robbie Williams tribute bands were outstanding and by the look on the faces of 500 party goers everyone had wonderful evening. Club members, friends and relatives toiled untiringly for most of the previous week and from very early morning on the day of the event to turn Northney Farm into the Island’s top party venue. Work finished just in time for the arrival of the first guests, and soon the beef was being carved, the burgers and sausages sizzling and the beer and wine flowing. The raffle was very well supported as were the various side stalls which were kept busy all evening. A smashing time was had at the crockery stall, card sharps were eagerly trying to beat Play your Cards Right and the Juicy Lucy stall revealed her underwear.  The dancing to Take all That and Robbie Williams carried on far into the night … and the reward for all the hard work and support? Proceeds of several thousand pounds towards the running of the HIBC Community Bus and other worthwhile causes on the Island in the coming year. A truly remarkable effort! The Club committee would like to thank the following for their support, ticket sales, raffle prizes, supply of equipment and an enormous amount of help before and on the night:

50 Glorious Years

On the 12th April the Hayling Island Businessmen’s Club celebrated their Jubilee with The Worshipful the Mayor of Havant.

Report by David J Pawley – Publicity Officer

Members both past and present and their partners attended a celebratory dinner with the Mayor as the guest of honour. The event was very well attended and it was generally agreed that the club was going from strength to strength in supporting the local community, not only with the Hayling Island Community Bus but also with donations to other local deserving causes, the latest beneficiary of which is the new Girls Brigade organisation being set up at St Andrews Church who received a donation of £200.

A special vote of thanks was also given to the Lions who will be presenting the Club with £3,500 as a contribution to our funds.  Their continued support is greatly appreciated.

Although no one has told the weather, it will soon be Barbeque time again and Club members are busy preparing for the Club’s main fund raising event of the year, the ANNUAL BARBEQUE At Northney Farm, St Peter’s Road, North Hayling on Saturday 12th July 2014. Mini Bus Chairman, Trevor Slydell reported that the new Community Bus was very popular. Please contact Trevor on minibus@hibc.org.uk for details.

2014 – March Report

HAYLING ISLAND BUSINESSMEN’S CLUB Report by David J Pawley

Over 250 club members and guests were joined by several local businesses at the Club’s Christmas “Bash” in December. Some great 60s music provided by Out of the Shadows kept everyone dancing until late into the night and the event raised over £1200 which will be used to help worthwhile causes on the Island in the coming year. We would like to thank everyone who supported the event by selling tickets and donating raffle prizes.

Several Club members assisted with the Lions Christmas float in December which raised £224 for Club funds. In addition the annual street collection in Mengham raised a further £552 despite appalling weather conditions. A donation of £30 has also been received from Yvonne Lenn and friends who had a collection during one of their recent events. The committee and members of the Club would like to sincerely thank all those Islanders that contributed to our fund raising activities.

Mini Bus Chairman, Trevor Slydell reported that the new Community Bus was already very popular. Although daytime use continues to be in high demand, the bus is very often not used during the evening or week end. The Club would therefore be interested to hear from any local charitable organization who would like to make use of this very valuable facility either on a “one off” or regular evening or week end basis. Please contact Trevor at minibus@hibc.org.uk or contact any Club member.

The Club’s thanks go for a donation that has been received from Ian Smith and Caroline MacDowell who raised funds with a collection from Islanders viewing their magnificent light display in South Road over the Christmas period. This is the third year that Ian and Caroline have chosen to donate the money to HIBC in the knowledge that the funds would be used for the benefit of local residents.

Earlier in February, newly elected Club Chairman, Dave Stanway welcomed Club members and their wives and partners to the customary Chairman’s Cocktail Party held at the Langstone Hotel. In his welcoming speech, Dave reiterated the need for the Club to continue moving forward despite the current economic difficulties. The cost of running the Community Bus increases almost on a monthly basis. Dave also took the opportunity of thanking member’s wives and partners for their continued and much valued support to the Club.

Please remember that the Club is supporting this year’s Hayling for St George event to be held on Eastoke Plaza on Sunday 27th April when the new Community Bus will be on display with representatives from the Businessmen’s Club on hand to explain the Club’s aims and activities.

The Club is now looking forward to events for this year and the first of which is a Murder

Mystery evening planned for Wednesday 28th May at the Langstone Hotel.  This will be

followed by the ever popular Annual Barbeque to be held at Northney Farm on

Saturday 12th July 2013. Full details including ticket outlets will be appearing in forthcoming editions of the Islander.
