2015 – April Report

Hayling Island Businessmen’s Club report for April Edition of Hayling Islander Report by John Cushion

Over 50 members, wives partners and guests enjoyed a fun night of Skittles at the Legion Club on 13th March. There was some keen rivalry with the lead changing hands frequently throughout the evening but the eventual winners were Barbara for the ladies and Peter for the men. Both received vouchers for an afternoon Tea for Two kindly donated by the Langstone Hotel. Wooden spoonist was the ever popular Ray Lee whose booby prize was a packet of skittles sweeties and the offer of a new pair of specs! Thanks to social secretary Tony Rees for arranging a super night out. A big thank you also to all the skittlers with whose generosity over £200 was raised for Club funds.

At the luncheon meeting on Thursday 19th March, Club members welcomed Nigel Jardine as their guest speaker. Nigel has been harbourmaster at Langstone Harbour for the last 16 years and following lunch he entertained members with an interesting overview of life in the harbour and how it is all financed.

Following the success at last year’s event, arrangements are in hand for the Club to have a cake and raffle stall at the Lions Donkey Derby day on Saturday 30th May. Contributions from member’s wives, partners, relatives and friends will be much appreciated. Contact details nearer the time.

The Club’s most important fund raising event of the year is the ever popular Annual Barbeque to be held at Northney Farm on Saturday 11th July 2015 with entertainment this year being provided by the exciting Spice Girlz. Full details including ticket outlets will be appearing in forthcoming editions of the Islander.

Plans are now well under way for this year’s Hayling for St George celebration. Following last year’s brilliant day in the sun, the event will again be held later in the summer when the weather is much kinder. There will be a brand of entertainment to suit most tastes and the event, which is completely free will be held on Eastoke Plaza on Sunday 30th August. The Club has undertaken to head up this year’ celebration and more details will be available shortly.

Use of the Community Bus continues to be in high demand particularly on week days but there is normally some availability at weekends and local organizations are welcome to contact Trevor Slydell at minibus@hibc.org.uk for more details. Please remember that use of the bus is offered completely free of any charges and even includes fuel. However, donations are always appreciated.

The name of the Club can be a little misleading as it is not necessary to be a businessman to join! Anyone who has time and the interest to be part of a club with the ethos of helping the less fortunate can apply for membership. In addition to aiding this worthwhile cause through the planning and arranging of events, there are several social gatherings throughout the year. The combination of these activities enables members to build close relationships and find friends for life.

The Club meets every second Thursday at Seacourt for lunch, section reports and occasional outside speakers. Potential members are invited to attend two or three meetings to find out more about the Club and see for themselves whether they feel able to join and offer their services. Anyone interested in joining or wishing to attend a meeting should telephone recruitment office Brian Smith via e-mail at recruitment@hibc.org.uk.

During the month, the Club was also pleased to agree a donation of £200 to the youngsters of theHayling Musical Society in support of their future productions at the Station Theatre and Community Centre.

A big thank you goes again to Ian Smith and Caroline MacDowell who raised funds with a collection from Islanders viewing their magnificent light display in South Road over the Christmas period. This is the fourth year that Ian and Caroline have chosen to donate the money to HIBC in the knowledge that the funds would be used for the benefit of local residents.

The good news continued upon receipt of magnificent donation of £500 from Sinah Warren Leisure being the proceeds of fund raising events at the Hotel.  Sinah’s managing director Martin Plummer was accordingly welcomed to the Luncheon Meeting on Thursday 19th February to meet the members and present the cheque.

2015 – January Report

A NEW CHAIRMAN for HAYING ISLAND BUSINESSMEN’S CLUB Report by the Publicity Team

At the Annual General Meeting of Hayling Island Businessmen’s Club on Tuesday 13th January, John Cushion was elected as Chairman for 2015. John moved to Hayling from his home county of Bedfordshire in 2011 and joined the Club the same year. He became publicity officer in 2012 a post he held for two years before becoming vice chairman in 2014. Although a relative new comer to the Club, John has a fine team of committee members to assist him and is greatly looking forward to his year in office.

In his review of 12 months in office, outgoing Chairman, Dave Stanway reported another successful year for the Club. Fund raising met with some fine efforts including the Annual Barbeque, Pig Race Night and several other events. Although a great deal had been achieved, Dave reminded members that there is still much more to be done and asked everyone to work hard towards keeping the great Club going and able to support the community with the minibus and donations to worthy applicants. Although a few members had been lost during the year mainly due to ill health and other commitments, membership levels remain good with several prospective new members in the pipeline. Dave also expressed his thanks for the excellent support he had received from the Officers and Members of the Club which had helped to make his year in office most enjoyable.

Although the main aim of the Club is to purchase, maintain and run the Hayling Island Community Bus, many other worthwhile causes were supported during 2014 with a number of monetary awards being made to numerous local organizations.  In addition, the Club made its normal donations to the Hayling Island Dramatic Society and continued to support students at Hayling College with the Wally Egan Award and Sportsperson of the Year Shield. The Christmas party at Sinah Warren was again a great success and was enjoyed by over 300 local senior citizens. Club members were in attendance to meet and greet the guests and generally ensure the success of the afternoon. However, many thanks must go to the management, staff and entertainment team at Sinah Warren for their wonderful generosity without which the event would be difficult to stage.

Before closing the meeting, members elected Marcus Foot as their Highest Achiever of the Year for 2014 and he was presented with the Doug Broughton Cup for his outstanding services to the Club. The “fun” award of the Wooden Spoon for the Club’s Biggest Stirrer for 2014 was awarded to Pat Keane for the tenth time!

The Club Committee and Members would like to thank all Islanders who contributed to the Club’s street collection in Mengham before Christmas which raised a fantastic £524. The generosity of local people never ceases to amaze us and everyone can rest assured that every last penny is spent on running the Community Bus and supporting other worthwhile causes.

The Community Bus was put to excellent use on Christmas Day when Club secretary Richard Chapman collected senior citizens who would otherwise have been alone at Christmas from all over the Island before helping to cook their festive lunch at St Andrews Church. All the food and “goodies” were donated by local organizations with the Club and the Lions providing financial support. Plans are already underway for a similar event this year.

Club members now look forward to the challenges which 2015 will bring. Several fund raising events are already planned including the ever popular Annual Barbeque on 11th July. The Club will also be heading up the this year’s Hayling for St George event on Eastoke Plaza on 30th August. A great deal of hard work is envisaged but with the help and generosity of the Island community and businesses a very successful year is in prospect. This will be the fourth year the event has taken place and although initially planned for St George’s Day was moved to August last year in the hope of more clement weather. Several local bands have already been booked so look out for more details in the coming months.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the Club or with an interest in joining is welcome to contact recruitment officer, Brian Smith at recruitment@hibc.org.uk or speak to any member at any of our forthcoming events.

A busy time for HIBC –  Report by David Pawley

The Piggies came back to Hayling on Saturday 15th November when over 100 Islanders and friends enjoyed a night out at the annual HIBC Pig Race Night. Fortunes were won and lost during some exciting and hard fought races followed by a delicious curry generously supplied by Richard Chapman, the Secretary and his wife, Jilly. Before the final race, the Pigs were auctioned to ensure that at least one lucky person went home with the bacon! Many thanks to Club member Malcolm Newnes and his wife Sue for arranging such a successful night out. Thanks also to everyone who attended the event and their generous support.

Several Club members attended the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Hayling war memorial on Sunday 9th November where Club Chairman Dave Stanway laid a wreath on behalf of the Club.

Club Committee and Members wish to take the opportunity of extending our best wishes to all on Hayling and the surrounding area for Christmas and the New Year and our sincere thanks to everyone who has supported us over the last 12 months. HAYLING ISLAND BUSINESSMEN’S CLUB Report – David Pawley

With the Annual Barbeque over and the Club in recess for August it is time to take stock on the year so far.

The Wally Egan award this year was given to James Adams for demonstrating a wide range of Enterprise skills during the year 9 “Design an App” Enterprise Challenge. This annual monetary award and suitably engraved Rose Bowl is made in memory of Wally who served HIBC both as Chairman and Secretary for many years until his death in 2007. The college selected James for the award because of the qualities displayed by him and for the considerable amount of resilience he showed throughout the challenge. Many congratulations to James.

At the same time The Geoff Foot Sportsperson of the Year award was made to Molly Money. This is a new trophy and monetary award in memory of Geoff who was a Club member for many years. The Club is pleased to sponsor this award to help promote sport at the College and was given to Molly for her outstanding contribution to sport.

Did you go to this year’s barbeque?  Did you buy raffle tickets?  Did you check them?  If not then please go to the Club’s website as a number of prizes went unclaimed including the first prize.  It could be you.  Plans for next year’s Barbeque are already underway and the first meeting of the Barbeque Committee is due to take place in September. Arranging the event involves a great deal of hard work and anyone interested in lending a hand next year or indeed in joining the Club should contact our secretary at secretary@hibc.org.uk .

2014 – August Report

Oh! Oh! What a Barbeque! Report from Hayling Island Businessmen’s Club – David Pawley

With all tickets sold well in advance of the event the annual HIBC Barbeque on the 12th July was a complete success. The weather was magnificent, the food excellent, the Take all That and Robbie Williams tribute bands were outstanding and by the look on the faces of 500 party goers everyone had wonderful evening. Club members, friends and relatives toiled untiringly for most of the previous week and from very early morning on the day of the event to turn Northney Farm into the Island’s top party venue. Work finished just in time for the arrival of the first guests, and soon the beef was being carved, the burgers and sausages sizzling and the beer and wine flowing. The raffle was very well supported as were the various side stalls which were kept busy all evening. A smashing time was had at the crockery stall, card sharps were eagerly trying to beat Play your Cards Right and the Juicy Lucy stall revealed her underwear.  The dancing to Take all That and Robbie Williams carried on far into the night … and the reward for all the hard work and support? Proceeds of several thousand pounds towards the running of the HIBC Community Bus and other worthwhile causes on the Island in the coming year. A truly remarkable effort! The Club committee would like to thank the following for their support, ticket sales, raffle prizes, supply of equipment and an enormous amount of help before and on the night:
